The Trouble Is, Biology Class Reminds Me Too Closely of Shame

It tells me there is too much flesh everywhere.

Dust particles are dead skin, fruit is flesh too.

And the apple I eat after school that day

says I am no better than fruit.

I am apple, cherry, peach

and apricots too.

But that means I am apple seeds,

cherry, peach and apricot pits.

You know what they say

in some religions

about apples and women.

We have complicated relationships.

I’m still trying so hard to make sense of what he did.

The Man with the Brutal Hands.

He saw my flesh

and thought of me like the fruit he sold.

Something to be taken.

Something to be bitten into.

Biology class says he was right,

but it also says

apples hide cyanide in their seeds,

behind the most innocent of guises.

Maybe if you grind up my bones,

you would find poison in there too.
